Middle School Matters For the Week of: 11.18.13 General Announcements: Study skills: Speed writing, tips for getting notes down faster
The Entire Middle School is in the Christmas Concert All Middle School Students need to wear black and white for their concert on December 19. White shirts (soft collar or button down for guys), black pants or skirts, dark socks and shoes too. It might be good to see if you have black and white that fits! Contact Mrs. Hoerle or Mrs. Van Noord by email. We have a great stash of black and white clothing at ACS if you need help with this. Did your student grow? It might be good to see if they have white and black things that fit! :)
Dessert Theatre: We must have your student's signed permission slip before we can release any casting. We will finish preliminary auditions Wednesday, 7th hour. Sixth Grade:
Art: In 6d we started working on portraits and creating a portrait of ourselves in 3 different ways. 6KI we continue to wrap up the hand project and will shortly take on drawing portraits as well. Please check moodle for homework. All hand projects are due next week 6d projects are due Tuesday and 6ki projects are due Thursday.
Band: We get to be in the Ada Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 7. See the band website for details: acsbands.weebly.com (look for the Christmas Parade Page) More details to come via email and paper.
Bible: We began to look at creation this week, and will continue with our fall into sin and God's promises to save us. Bible memory to work on Philippians 2: 1-3 due December 6.
History: Map projection group projects due early in the week, and then we will begin to look at oceans and the ocean currents affect on weather.
Language arts: The sixth graders will complete their in-class Tuck projects on Monday. Then, we will begin a unit on SHORT STORIES next week. We are using familiar fairy tales to help us understand the basic elements of short stories (characters, plot, theme, setting, conflict...). In addition, we will take a look at homonyms (homophones).
Math: Wow the 6th graders are doing a great job working with decimals. Next week we will combine our percent and decimal skills to create a circle graph using US average household expenses.
PE: This week in PE we will be starting our basketball project. Students will spend time describing terms and making a video of those terms.
Science: We have been enjoying some pretty amazing displays of God's creativity this week. Did you hear about "squiddy" or the egg in the bottle? It is so cool to see these students getting excited about science. In the coming week, we will launch a study on atoms and elements. A project will be announced soon.
Spanish: Memory verse and prayer had to be rescheduled and will resume next week.
Seventh Grade: Art: All classes are in different places and working on different aspects of a couple of projects. Our next project deals with portraits and Lego's - this is going to be awesome. Please check moodle for sketchbook homework.
Band: Solo and Ensemble is Tuesday, November 19. All students are working hard on solos. Dynamics, Rhythm, Tone, Pitch, Accuracy, Articulation - - loads of things to consider as we work on our solos. The schedule is out on Moodle and also on acsbands.weebly.com. Parents are welcome to come hear their student play their solos for a judge. Please come and support us! Students wear white and black for this day.
Bible: Sanderson: We're studying Jewish Feasts and Festivals this week to wrap up our 1st trimester together. Van Noord: Elijah! Elisha! Ezekiel! :) And then, we will summarize the prophets we studied as we end the trimester. Ask about our Elisha readings....many miracles! Wanner: The Kings of Israel and Judah have been presented and on Tuesday we will have an open note test over the material that was presented to us. Please don't forget to study for the long answer and essay questions. Also coming next week Friday is our last Bible memory over Lamentations 3: 22-26
History: This week we are studying East Asia. Its ancient history and even more modern history. Topics that we will cover include everything from the ancient Chinese dynasties to the Vietnam War. On Monday students will be presenting their short, 1½ day research activities on the Great Wall, Terracotta Soldiers, the Forbidden City, the Silk Road, or Marco Polo. We look forward to seeing what came out of this class work.
Language arts: The mystery has been solved; we have finished the final chapter of "The Westing Game"! Throughout reading the novel, we have all been taking careful notes and descriptions of the possible suspects. Now we are creating "wanted" posters featuring artistic portrayals the the many characters from the book, with textual descriptions of each. The posters will be put up throughout Mr. Huttenga's room. The posters will be due on Monday. Later next week, we will have a test on the novel.
PE: This week students will be playing 5 vs 5 basketball games. We will also spend time reviewing rules and terms that will be on their basketball test.
Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): This week we will begin chapter 5 - a short study of ratios and proportions.
Pre-Algebra (Kiser): We are taking a quick trip back to review and strengthen our understanding of ratios and proportions before we tackle percents.
Science: On Friday the students will be taking a quiz on bees. Study guide is on Moodle. Next week we will be starting our study of bacteria and viruses.

Eighth Grade:
Algebra: Witte: We will continue and finish our study of linear equations (chapter 4) this coming week. We will be aiming for a test on chapter 4 a week from this coming Monday.
Art: In 8th grade we are working towards completing our calligraphy and illumination project. Please check moodle for homework.
Band: Students need black and white next week. We perform for the judges on Tuesday, November 19 from 11:10-11:40ish. Parents are welcome to come see us perform in the band room and support us! :) Please pray that we will honor God with our talents.
Bible: Witte: We have been working our way through the first 10 chapters of Mark this past week. We will conclude this study this coming week and then I will be introducing a project for them that highlights the different characteristics of Christ. Huttenga: We just had our first Paul Film Festival today; the students filmed some great adaptations of the adventures of Paul from the New Testament. Next week will begin with examining divisions in the early church, and how important it is for the church's unity to remain grounded in the true gospel.
Geometry: We are learning how to do proofs in Geometry. The chapter 5 test will be given on Wednesday, November 20.
History: We will also have a bar exam (test) on chapter 7 and the Constitution on Thursday, November 21. Study guides went home today (Friday). To conclude our DeWeerd Law School the Citizenship Handbooks Projects will be due Tuesday, November. 26 (+5 extra credit) or Monday, December 2.
Language arts: Over the weekend, students will finish reading John Steinbeck's classic rags-to-riches-to rags story "The Pearl". We will be exploring the world surrounding "The Pearl" with a webquest project. The project will allow students to explore topics such as the city of La Paz, Mexico, scorpions, pearl diving and John Steinbeck.
PE: This week the students will be playing basketball games. We will also spend time reviewing terms and rules that will be on their basketball test.
Science: We finished our study of rocks and are now studying plate tectonics.

Athletics: 5th/6th Grade Basketball: The 5th and 6th grade basketball season is now underway. Game schedules have not been made yet, however, as soon as they are available I will be sending them out to each team via email. Reminder, this winter 5th and 6th grade games will begin the first week in December, with the regular season ending on January 18. Please keep in mind that the 5th and 6th grade end of season tournament will extend the season thru February 1. 7th/8th Grade Basketball Sign ups: Please click on the link below to sign your son/daughter up for 7th/8th Basketball. The deadline to sign up is Friday, November 22. The first practice for 7th and 8th grade will not begin until December 9.
