Middle School Matters For the Week of: 11.11.13
General Announcements:
Something to think about: The school store sells entree items and also candy. Please encourage your child to eat and buy responsibly. Candy is lovely but too much candy is not a good choice for anyone. Please encourage moderation of sweets and good eating choices. :)

Sixth Grade:
Art: Both 6th grade class are closing in on completing the first project. 6B will work on portrait drawing next week and 6b first project is due 11/19. 6A has one more week in class to complete their first project and then it is due on 11/21. Please check moodle for homework. I am looking for animated food this coming week.
Band: Quiz on page 38 next week Thursday. We have Christmas music to play! Also, please put the Ada Christmas Parade on your calendars, Saturday, December 7 in Ada. The bands will ride a float together. Very fun! More details to come.
Bible: We are beginning a new unit in Bible next week all about creation through the stories of Noah. Bible Memory is Psalm 105:1-7 and due on Friday.
History: Landforms quiz on Wednesday. Also beginning a new unit on the many different kinds of map projections.
Language arts: Students are working on a project at school about the book Tuck Everlasting. This is in place of a test. On Monday, we will also compare and contrast the movie to the book. Books are ALWAYS better!! Some of your students volunteered to bring in some popcorn and drinks while we watch the movie. Thanks in advance. :) Students will bring home their quizzes for a parent signature (due Wednesday). Extra credit poem due Thursday. Math: This past week students reviewed ratios from earlier this year and are reviewing some of their decimal computation skillsthrough collecting data and creating a graph in Pages. What an amazing job they did creating a graph on the computer. They are ready to graph their data from their science labs now. Over the next week our most challenging concept will be division with decimal numbers.
PE: This week we will be working through our basketball unit. We will also be covering terms that will be on our basketball project.
Orchestra: Work on the 8th notes, especially the slurred 8th notes . Be sure to notice any accidentals too. If anyone wants to audition for the first violin part you will need to play these parts for me at lunchtime on MONDAY. See you then!
Science: This week we will problem-solve in new situations using our understanding of the particle model for matter and work to organize our understanding of how to do a great "lab write-up."
Spanish: We have a memory verse and prayer in Spanish that is to be memorized for 6A Tuesday and 6B Wednesday. There is a resource on Moodle for these. Students need to be able to say both aloud to Sra. Weaver; so if possible, have them say these aloud to you to help them prepare!
Seventh Grade:
Art: 7d and 7f are working on their negative and positive space projects tied to robots and ceramics. 7e will began the negative and positive space project today and will be working through it these next couple of week. 7e endangered animal sculptures are due on 18 of November. Please check moodle for homework.
Band: Solo and Ensemble is Tuesday, November 19. The time schedule will be posted on Moodle later this week. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend their child's solo performance. Also, please put the Ada Christmas Parade on your calendars. It is Saturday, December 7 in Ada. The bands will ride a float together. Very fun! More details to come.
Bible: Sanderson: We are wrapping up our unit on key phrases of the Old Testament and will begin a study of Jewish feasts and festivals. Wanner: We will be giving our king puppet presentation to our classmates this week in class. We are tentatively planning an open note quiz on the King's this coming Friday. There will be a study guide sent home for the long answer and essay question early next week. Van Noord: Ask about what we made and ate to remember the prophets Elijah and Elisha. We have a one-page essay due Wednesday from the Elijah worksheet.
History: Next week in 7th grade history we will spend a lot of time taking in an overview of the history of East Asia. We will learn about ancient Chinese kingdoms all the way through WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Language arts: We are continuing reading through the mystery novel "The Westing Game". Students are currently keeping track of details and clues of the many possible suspects: who in Sunset Towers is responsible for the death of Sam Westing? Our notes and detective work will result in several, creative "wanted" posters; these will demonstrate our attention to detail, descriptive language, and the ability to back up our claims with quotes from the textbook.
PE: This week we will be working on our basketball unit. I will also start reviewing terms with the students that will be on their basketball quiz.
Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): Test on chapter 4 (Powers and Roots) on Thursday. Review sheet (sent home Friday) is due on Tuesday.
Pre-Algebra (Kiser): Students have done an excellent job with roots and powers. We will have our chapter test on Monday.
Orchestra: Work slowly on all of the 8th note parts in our music.. Try to add some vibrato to longer notes.
Science: Bee project is due on Friday. Though most of the work is being done here at school, I'm sure your child would appreciate another set of eyes checking over the work before it is turned in.

Eighth Grade: Algebra: Witte: This coming week we will be working on chapter 4 which covers linear equations. We will be learning how to graph linear equations and how to use the slope-intercept form. No tests or quizzes are planned at this time for next week.
Art: 8th graders are working on their calligraphy and illumination project. Most students will be inking their project this coming week and then working on adding color to their illuminations. Please check moodle for homework.
Band: Our band performance for judges will be Tuesday, November 19 in the band room beginning at 11:10. Please come see/hear and support us. Also, please put the Ada Christmas Parade on your calendars. It is Saturday, December 7 in Ada. The bands will ride a float together. Very fun! More details to come.
Bible: Huttenga: This coming week, we will hold our Paul Film Festival! Students will be able to show their films to the class and explain what creative adaptations they have made to the adventures of Paul and Barnabas. In the meantime, we will continue exploring the opposing worldviews of Paul and the Judaizers, who believed that salvation could be attained through laws and good works. Witte: This coming week we will be reading through the first 10 chapters of Mark. We will be looking at who recognized Jesus as the Christ and who did not. Students will be asked to read a few chapters at night and answer a few questions for homework.
Geometry: We have finished chapter 4 and will be working on congruency next week.
History: Memory quiz on the Preamble of the Constitution on Tuesday. We are continuing our work on learning the different parts of the document.
PE: This week we will be continuing to work thru our basketball unit. Students will be playing 5 v. 5 in class and reviewing terms that will be on their basketball test.
Orchestra: Practice slowly on difficult parts of our songs so that our intonation improves! Work to add vibrato on all longer notes too.
Science: Continuing our study of rocks. We will finish this week and have a test next week Tuesday.

Athletics:
5th/6th Grade Basketball Sign ups are now closed. If you signed your son/daughter up, you will receive information this week regarding practice times which will begin next week; games will begin the first week of December. The regular season will end on January 18, however if teams desire to participate in a tournament, the season would be extended until February 1. 7th/8th Grade Basketball Sign ups: Click on the link below to sign your son/daughter up for 7th/8th Basketball.
