Middle School Matters

 

February 6, 2015
General Announcements

Parent-Teacher Conferences:  Please join us this Thursday, February 12 between 5:30 - 8:30pm for Parent-Teacher Conferences.  We will have a second night of conferences on Thursday, February 19 from 4:30 - 7:30pm.  


The MS teachers will be in the Commons ready to meet with you.  You will have the opportunity to touch base with as many teachers as you need.  Please keep in mind that these conferences are designed to be 3-5 minutes in length.  If you feel like you need a longer time than that, please coordinate that with your child's teacher directly.  Thanks.

    6th Grade News

    Art:  In class this coming week we will complete our portrait project.  All classes might have a little bit of portrait project to complete at home.  Please check the homework calendar for homework due dates.  


    Band:  We are playing some jazz licks, and music from a variety of genres. Many students are earning extra credit by playing jazz solos.  Very fun to see/hear.


    Bible:  We are continuing our study of Abraham and his life.  Bible Memory this week due on Wednesday.   Here is a link to a copy of the verses and when each set of the Commandments are due.  The Old and New Testament Ten Commandments


    History:  This week we will be learning about World Cultures and how that influences us as Christians.


    Language arts: Next week students will work on their independent reading projects.  We will also finish up our short story unit.   


    Math (Kiser): We continue to work with variables and expressions.  Students have done very well as we begin working with Algebra concepts.


    Science: We're continuing a study of chemical interactions this week.


    Spanish:   TESTS coming up:  6A on Thursday (2/12) and 6B & 6C on Friday (2/13)  There is a Test Review posted on their Moodle Spanish Course, as well as other resource materials like vocabulary lists.

     
    7th Grade News

    Algebra (7th): We are digging into Chapter 8. Keep up the good work!


    Art: In class both class will complete the Lego portrait project next week and begin a short project that looks at jealousy.  Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.


    Band:  We are beginning to work on Dinner Theatre music and other tunes for future concerts.


    Bible: Our study of 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 is partially complete.  Students have the first 3 journals and 3 activities due on Monday 2/9.  Writing these verses from memory will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 17.


    History:  We are wrapping up our study of Africa next week.  We will be taking a test on Africa next Friday.  This test will cover our notes on the history of Africa and a little on the geography of Africa.  We will spend time throughout the week reviewing and getting ready for the test in class.

    Language arts: We are doing a lot of research for Paideia. Students will be researching and taking notes a lot this coming week. Students need to finish reading Trouble: they will have a quest on the story later in the week.


    Pre-Algebra (Kiser): Next week we will finish chapter 7 on expressions.  Our test will most likely be scheduled for Feb 17 or 18.

     

    Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): We'll be working on percentages for the next week or so.  Students are working hard and enjoying the applicability of this content to their daily lives.  A test is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 18.


    Science: This week we are wrapping up our study of butterflies and will be moving on to our bird unit. The students have their butterfly identification test on Tuesday February 10.

    Spanish:  7th graders are mastering the regular verbs!  Lots more practice this coming week, with some translations included.  Watch the homework calendar for assignments.

     
    8th Grade News

    Dessert Theatre:  Only TEN more rehearsals!  Well, sort of.  We only have ten more rehearsals before we go into dress rehearsals.  Gulp!  They are working hard and looking great, but it now becomes all the more important that everyone is able to stay for rehearsals.  Please check the schedule regularly for current information:  http://acsdesserttheatre.weebly.com/rehearsal-schedule.html


    Baby Pictures:  There are still 15-20 families that have not sent in a baby picture for the yearbook.  You student was informed about this earlier this week if they were missing a baby picture.  Please help by getting this sent in as soon as possible.  Thank you.


    Algebra (Boerkoel):  We will have the standardized DEA test on Friday (13th).  On Monday February 16 we will have a test over chapter 8.


    Algebra (Holtrop): We will be beginning chapter 8. The past chapter was a challenging one and the class worked hard! Please have your student take the time to work on missing assignments.


    Art: Both 8f and 8d have their Frank Stella Project due by the end of class on Monday.  Artist statements for 8f and 8d are due on Tuesday and all instructions to complete this are found on the 8th grade moodle page.  Finally, 8f and 8d have a ceramic pot think sheet due Monday as well.  8e has till Wednesday 18th of February to complete the painting and artist statements.  8e ceramic pot sheets are due next Wednesday.  Please check the homework calendar for due dates.  


    Band:  We are working on a variety of great tunes for future performances. What a great group!

    Geometry: We are continuing our work on area with a review of algebraic skills.  The test on this unit will be on Wednesday and Thursday, February 11-12.  We will then begin to work with three-dimensional figures and will learn the vocabulary associated with these figures as well as methods to find missing segments and angles.  Please note that I will be at parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, February 12.

    History:  Next week we will continue to look at Westward Expansion.  Students will be asked to draw a political cartoon about Manifest Destiny.  We will learn about the adventures on the Oregon Trail and we may even take a try at conquering the Trail ourselves.  Finally, we will learn about how the Mexican-American War helped America achieve it's goal of ruling from sea-to-sea.  

    Language arts: We are finishing up parts of speech/grammar this week. Because of the snow day this past Monday, our unit on The Giver will now begin on this coming Monday.

    Students also need to remember that they have the second installation of their Book of Memories project due Monday. This essay will be given to Mr. Witte.


    Science: We will have a test over earthquakes next week Friday, February 13.  After our study of earthquakes, we will be studying stars.


    Spanish:  8th graders have a test this coming week over current vocabulary, verbs traer & poner, and DOP's (direct object pronouns)  All study materials are in the current Moodle Spanish Course:  8F test is Wednesday (2/11) and 8E & 8D test is Thursday (2/12).

     

    Athletics
