Speaking of revision, we ended this week with a discussion about the importance of editing: writers become better at writing when they conference with other writers! On Friday, we began peer-reviewing.

    8th Grade News

    Announcements:

NorthPointe Christian High School is hosting a Curriculum & Scheduling Information Night Monday March 30, 2015 at 6:30pm.  Join us to hear more about our high school course offerings, dual enrollment, partnership with Kent Career Technical Center (KCTC), on campus college class offerings, AP course, standardized testing and more.  During this event parents will begin the course selection process, hear about a typical four year high school schedule, ask questions about classes, and meet our Guidance Staff.  Questions?  Contact Brittany Johnson, johnsonb@npchristian.org or 942-0350 x276.

Boerkoel Algebra (8th):  I'm planning on a quiz Thursday over chapter 10.

Algebra (Holtrop): We're are working hard at grasping quadratic equations. A test on Chapter 9 is planned to happen a week from Tuesday.

Art: 8d and 8f grade students have completed building their ceramic pots (YES!!!!!!!) and now move on to a project where we will consider and create some street art.  Students do have an sketchbook assignment that needs to be completed through using http://makepixelart.com/free/# that also needs to be printed off and brought to class next week.  8e we continue working on those ceramic pots because snow days and musical practice has robbed us of class time.  I believe there is some extra art time in the works for 8e next week Friday so that we can get caught up.  Please check the homework calendar for due dates.

Bible: We have discussed the growth of the church in relation to persecution, Saul's conversion, and diversity. Next week, we will continue our study of Paul's life and missionary work to the Gentiles.

Geometry: We are doing a short unit on proofs using coordinate geometry and will have the unit 11 test on Wednesday March 25.

History:  Next week we will continue our study of the Civil War.  We will be focusing on the Battle of Antietam, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Gettysburg.  We will also continue to watch sections of the Civil War documentary by Ken Burns.

Language arts: Congrats to the 8th graders, who this week endured a dystopian classroom, tyrannical teacher and - scariest of all - a test! All of these were the final milestones of our unit on Lois Lowry's The Giver, where we spent much time discussing the importance of identity, and the dangers that arise when aspects of our identity are ignored.

The Giver can be classified as science fiction, but we will continue to study identity through the lenses of history and drama; as the 8th graders gear up for their musical next week, we will also begin delving into The Diary of Anne Frank, a play by Frances Goodrich. Throughout this unit, we will be discussing how characters maintain essential aspects of their identity - especially faith - even in the darkest circumstances.

PE: This week we began our fitness unit with a look at exercise and our heart rates. Next week we will evaluate our fitness level with fitness tests.

Orchestra:   We began a new piece - Ships of Ireland and are also putting lots of work into Pirates - but this week  we will take it easy and just review pieces.

Science: This week we will finish our study of stars and begin studying moon phases.
