Attention Parents of 5th Graders:  We are excited to have your children join the Middle School next school year. Please consider being a candidate for the Middle School Support Council (MSSC) for a 3-year term. This group is comprised of parents of a girl and boy from each grade in middle school for a total of six parents. We primarily assist the staff with the fall spiritual retreat, exploratories, and graduation. This is a great opportunity for parents to get involved in middle school life!

We will still collect names this week and then choose two parents of a 5th grade boy and girl by random drawing. If you are interested or would like additional information about the MSSC, please contact Barb Weaver at barbaraweaver@sbcglobal.net or 540-9824.

    8th Grade News

Sub Sale Forms are due on Tuesday, May 12.  Information about the sub sale and other end of the year details for 8th graders was sent home earlier this week.  You should have also received this information in an email earlier today.  Thanks.

Algebra (Holtrop): We are working through parts of chapter 11 and 12 in the course. We are also spending time reviewing during class. I have and will be sending home review material with students that they can work on to prepare. I'm also willing to meet with them for study sessions before school and during lunch. Please let me know if that's a good option for your student.

Art: 8f and 8d will be working on installing and completing the Dale Chihuly project and 8e is working on the space invader project.   Please check due dates on the homework calendar.

Band:  Our spring concert is Thursday, May 14.  Call time is 6:30. Wear black and white attire. Please encourage regular practice!  Maybe an outdoor, al fresco practice! Great concert on GF Day!

Bible: We have finished up a quick study of the fundamentals of Christianity along with the understanding of other world religions. The goal is to gain a better understanding of what other people believe in order to foster respect and understanding when witnessing about our own faith. Next week we will further our study of Apologetics through The Case for Christ. Also, students can find a review sheet on Google Classroom for the final Bible exam.

Geometry: We have finished our unit on trigonometry and will start our final unit on circles.  There will be a short test on the circle unit the week before the math exam and we will spend a good deal of time working on exam review as well.

History:  We are studying for our Quiz on Reconstruction this Tuesday.  Students have been working on a review sheet in class to help prepare for the quiz.  Next week, based on popular demand, we will do a mini-overview of WWII.  As far as the exam, students received information and study tips for the exam today in class.  The exam will cover material we covered in chapters 14, 15, and 16.

Language arts: Students are working through our final unit: Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy. This will be our last subject before taking the exam. To more accurately mirror the atmosphere of a high school exam, 8th graders are now required to read this book at a more intensive pace while still searching for and recognizing key themes regarding conflict, social/institutional injustice, and our Biblical mandate to transform the world. We will be close to finishing the book by the end of next week.

Students were given access to an exam review guide this Thursday. I have spoken with them about effective preparation and study habits; please encourage them to begin studying early and frequently.

-LA exam: May 21 and 22 (determined by class section)

    - May

PE: This week we enjoyed playing lacrosse games outside! Next week we will be playing softball. Weather permitting we will be outside again!

Orchestra:  Our Middle school Spring Concert is Thursday, May 14th here at ACS.  Show up at 6:20PM to tune- in the orchestra room.  Dress code is concert dress- black and white!  Thanks for the great performances on Grandfriends Day!

Science: This week we will finish studying eclipses and start studying tides.

Spanish:  Next week we will begin a cumulative review, with a multiple choice test the following week.  Cumulative means it will have to do with EVERYTHING the students have learned since 3rd grade!  Since language is naturally cumulative, this should all be familiar to them, but a full review packet will be provided next week.  This will be extremely helpful for those planning to go into Spanish II next year, also.

Advanced Placement for Spanish:  Several of our students should be considering entering Spanish II at their respective high schools this fall.  If your student is considering this, they should also consider coming to a special study ("cram") session here on Wednesday, June 3rd, from 1 - 3 p.m.  Each high school has its own method of discerning placement, but students planning to attend GRCH may take their Spanish Placement Test here at ACS on Friday, June 5th, from 9 a.m. - 12 noon.   Please contact Mrs. Weaver with any questions.
