Middle School Matters

General Announcements:

Study Skills: Homework tips will be  shared this week.

7th and 8th grade go to Art Prize on Thursday, Sept 26.  Chaperone and permission slip papers will be sent home with your child next week Monday, please make sure to return these slips by Wednesday September 18.

Service Project - Do you have any old blue jeans lying around?  Plastic milk jugs?  Cotton fabric?  7th and 8th graders will be needing these items to complete one of their projects at our October 3-4 Service Project.  If you have old blue jeans (holes are ok) and CLEAN & dry milk jugs that you'd be willing to donate, please bring them to Miss Sanderson in Room 406 soon.


Sixth Grade:

Art prize - 6th grade to go on Monday, Sept. 23.  We will leave around 11:30am and return before the end of the school day.  We do need a few more parents if you want to volunteer to chaperone a small group of kids.  Contact Chris DeWeerd if you want to help.  We need a permission to go to on this field trip.  Please complete this form online.


Art: Working with pattern will be out focus this week in class.  6d has both a sketchbook and an assignment due on Tuesday and 6ki has an assignment to complete.  In both case check moodle for details and dates.  

Band:  Band meets Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Practice sheets are out.  Please encourage your band student to find regular times to practice and learn their songs!  

Bible: Outside Inside Bag Due on Tuesday!  Bible Memory (Psalm 139:13-14) due Friday.
 We are continuing to look at the large themes of the Bible.  Later this week, your child can show you what they have created with Comic Life on the computer.

History:  We are continuing our study of maps, globes, latitude, and longitude with a variety of activities and in class projects.

Language arts:  The 6th graders have been working hard.  We have been learning the "how to's" of warm ups, spelling activities (synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, prefixes), proofreading/editing, typing, and email etiquette, etc.  Students also started working on the writing process for a narrative writing piece.  Next week we will continue with all of these things as well as begin reading our first novel, Tuck Everlasting.

Math: This next week we will continue working with Ratios, Rates and Proportions.  While these topics are review from last year, we are stretching ourselves by placing them in the context of word problems.  If your student is in need of extra help, don't forget to remind them about the online resources at connected.mcgraw-hill.com.  They will need their school username and password to login.

Orchestra:  What a wonderful group of super 6th grade string players.  Almost all of the students have learned our first 2 orhestra songs-- so be sure to ask your daughter or son for a concert!  We will  work on new pages in the book as well!

Science: What a great group of scientists we have in 6th grade!  We're quickly becoming familiar with equipment in the lab and will begin learning about measurement and the Scientific Method in the coming week to continue building a great foundation for some exciting lab work in the near future.  Keep up the great work, 6th graders!

Spanish:   We will be reviewing places and the verb "to go" in the I, You, He/She forms for a quiz on Friday.  Students have (6A will receive Tuesday) a study guide.


Seventh Grade:

Algebra:  Chapter 1 test on Tuesday

Art: 7th graders continue to work on their art element and principle pinwheel projects.  Please check moodle for the sketchbook assignment.  

Band:  We are working on our books and also on sheet music.  Please encourage regular practice at home!  :)  What a great bunch of 7th graders!

Bible:  
Sanderson - We have finished our mini unit on the Shema and will begin incorporating it into our daily "rhythm" in class.  We are now beginning a study of judges and journeys in the Old Testament.

Van Noord - we did our first memory work today.  Check Power School to see how this went for your student.  All Micah work is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday. (If they need to print their project at the beginning of class, that is ok).

Wanner:  This coming week we will work through 1 Samuel Chapters 16 - 31.  As we work through these chapters we will engage in creating some related art to the issue found in these chapters.  

History:  In 7th grade history we have spent some time doing an overview of geography.  Tuesday we will take a test on this overview.  The test includes knowing a "kid-friendly" definition of geography, the 5 themes of geography, and the 50 geography terms that we have been reviewing every day in class.  Your students can review these vocab words easily on their computer...have them show you!   

Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): We will be having a test on Chapter 1: The Language of Algebra on Tuesday. The online practice test (due Monday) will help your students to prepare for success.  Students must log-in to our ConnectED Math site and it is in their "homework backpack" there.

Pre-Algebra (Kiser): Our Ch 1 test will be on Tuesday.  Student have completed three chapter review already and have an online practice test due Tuesday to help them prepare for success.  Students must log-in to their online ConnectED portal for these online reviews.

Orchestra:    We are learning all of page 38 in the book- and  each student will play one of these lines in class so practice carefully-- on numbers 195 through 198.  Keep up the great work.

LA: This week we will be finishing up our study of the Witch of Blackbird Pond! Students can expect one more addition of chapter questions for the last half of the book. The following week, we will have a test on the material. On Wednesday, we will be visiting our own library; students will have an opportunity to read or pick out books for leisure reading.

Science: We are continuing our nature study of plants.  Nearly each day the students should be doing a few minutes of work on their keynotes.  Please proofread their work.

Spanish:  Students continue learning their directional prepositions with the "Peppy Preposition Jig:"  See if they'll do it for you.  :)  They are also learning vocabulary for in the living room and bedroom.  Next week we will start our preposition projects, which will be done in class for a quiz grade.


Eighth Grade:

Algebra:  In Algebra we are reviewing and getting ready for our Chapter 1 Test.  The Test is scheduled for Tuesday.  We will move onto Chapter 2 later in the week which will focus on working with Real Numbers (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative numbers).  

Art: 8th graders continue their work on their initial designs by completing the cutting of their block and then printing the block.  Check moodle for the sketchbook assignment.  

Band:  We are working on a difficult piece that includes the tune "It Is Well With My Soul."  I can already tell that this band will be able to play it!

Bible:  
Witte:  Next week we will be finishing up the Introduction to the Gospels.  We will finish looking at the Gospel of Luke and then moving on to John.  I have scheduled a test on Friday that covers the differences of these four gospels.  We will do some reviewing in class and highlight key ideas from our notes.  

Geometry: We are finishing unit one on points,lines, and planes and our unit test will be on Tuesday, September 17th.

LA:  This week we are continuing our focus on the NHD project. On Tuesday, students should have 10-11 pages of notes to be checked in class. On Friday, students need to have a first draft of their outline. This will help students see where their paper is as a whole so far, and give them an opportunity to see what information they still need to gather. After settling in to the project a bit more this week, we will start looking towards grammar and sentence structure, the things that will help us spice up our writing.

History:  We are continuing to work on NHD on Tuesday and Thursdays, and learn about the Revolutionary War on the other days of class. 11 pages of notes are due next week for NHD!

Orchestra:    Wow this group of 8th grade string players is amazing--  they have already learned a  piece in 9/8 time and are sounding just great  - new songs on Monday will include some pop music !  Be sure to ask your child for a concert!

Science: We are continuing our study of minerals.

Spanish:  Since we meet on Mondays and Fridays, we have only had two Spanish classes thus far.  Next week, however, we will jump into our first unit on chores around the house.  As in previous years, vocabulary lists and flashcards will be available on Moodle.
