Middle School Matters

For the Week of: 10.28.13


Sixth Grade:


Computers are set to go home on Tuesday. Please click to read a few important announcements about handling the computers.  


Band:  October practice records are due soon!  :)  Please encourage practice at home.  :) Pages 36-40 are up now - there are solos and duets and also full band numbers.  Hooray!


Bible:  Bible Test on Unit 2 on Wednesday (10/30). Bible memory ALL books of the Bible due Friday (11/1).  These may be said anytime during the week.  Bible brochure due next Monday.  (11/4)


History:  We are continuing our study of the amazing variety of landforms that God created in this world.


Language arts: Also, this week Thursday (Oct. 31) the 6th graders will have a TEST on their 15 (individual) MY WORDS.  They have been working with these and practicing at school, but it would be helpful for you to review them at home as well.  In addition, we are nearing the climax of Tuck Everlasting.  We will be able to have some thought-provoking discussions about decisions characters make.  Along with this, we will read and discuss Robert Frost's poem, "The Road not Taken."  Students may begin memorizing this poem for EXTRA CREDIT.  


Math: The focus for next week will be to review Chapter 2.  An online review will come home on Monday.


PE: This week will be our last week of our basketball unit.  Students will spend time reviewing the rules of basketball.  Reminder:  we will have our basketball test the week of November 3.  


Science: We have begun a study on properties of matter, beginning with density.


Seventh Grade:


Algebra (Boerkoel):  Chapter 3 test on Tuesday


Band:  Solo and Ensemble is Nov. 19.  We continue to work on solos and with accompanists.  Much great work is happening.  


Bible:  

Sanderson: We have wrapped up a short exploration of prayer and will beginning a new unit in the coming week.  Stay tuned!

Van Noord:  Daniel is the current book/prophet.  Ask your student what we did/saw/smelled regarding the book of Daniel.  All Daniel work comes due next week - a different assignment comes due each day.


History:  This week in history students will work in some groups to create newscasts that feature some different current events and news items from around South Asia.  


PE:  This will be our last week of our basketball unit.  Reminder:  students will take a test over their basketball unit the week of November 3.  


Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): Chapter 4: Powers and Roots begins on Monday.  Students who have missing assignments have been alerted and all grades are posted on PowerSchool.


Pre-Algebra (Kiser): We will begin chapter 4 on Monday which will be a study of Powers, Exponents and Roots.  


Science: Nature study test on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Study guide has been handed out in class. An additional copy can be printed from Moodle.


Eighth Grade:


Algebra: Witte:  This coming week in 8th grade algebra we will continue to look at how to solve equations.  We have been making some good progress this past week so we hope to keep that going.  Students are expected to be showing their work as they solve these mulit-step equations.  There will bo NO tests in 8W algebra this week.  Please help our students stay on top of the daily work.


Algebra (Boerkoel):  Chapter 3 test on Tuesday


Band:  We continue to work on full band numbers and also some students are playing solos for judges on Nov. 19.  Great things continue to happen with this group.  I am thankful for them!


Bible:  

WItte:  This week we will start reviewing Unit 2 and we will be preparing for a test on Friday.  Review materials will go home on Tuesday with each student.


Geometry: We have finished Chapter 3 and tested on Wednesday , Oct. 23rd. Next week we will begin to study three different kinds of transformations in Chapter 4.


History:  We will continue in the study of the Constitution in DeWeerd Law School.  Comic Life pages are due Friday (11/1).  We will have one more class day to work on it (Monday), and then it will be homework.


PE:  This will be our final week of our basketball unit.  Reminder:  students will take a test over the basketball unit the week of November 3.  


Science: Studying rocks.
