Art SurPrize:

The ACS Curriculum Enhancement Committee is happy to sponsor an art competition for any interested ACS 5th-8th grade student. This is an opportunity for students to create a piece of artwork, using any medium, based on their interpretation of our school theme - Centered on Christ. Entries will be critiqued by a combination of students, staff, and an artist panel to determine the top three art pieces.

GUIDELINES

  • Students must create a preliminary sketch and material list to present to Mr. Wanner after school during the week of Oct. 17-23. Appointments are on a first come, first serve basis.

  • You must supply your own materials to be pre-approved by Mr. Wanner.

  • Artists must create an "Artist Statement" about their work of art. (Mr. Wanner will provide writing prompts).

  • Art pieces must be turned in to a member of the Curriculum Enhancement Committee (Dee Lenters and Lynne Winkle) between the hours of 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Nov. 7 in the ACS Commons. (No early entries, please.)

Sixth Grade:

Thanks to all the parents who worked hard and gave up their time to help us with the service projects.  We received many great positive comments from the organizations on your hard work and positive attitudes.   Thank you to all parents for your prayers and encouragement this week!  God's hand and feet were in action all over Kent Country the past few days!

We put together the Breakfast Bundles for Kid's Food Basket on Friday, but we are short a few items.  If you forgot to bring food, we still need Poptarts, Raisins, and Fruit Snacks....  Please have these items turned in by Tuesday so we can deliver the bags!  Thanks.

Monday we will send "paper" progress reports home with your child.  You can check your child progress anytime on PowerSchool.  Need help to login in to PowerSchool?  Contact Nate Kiser

Band:  GREAT work on the March Slav test.  Well done!  :)  We are almost done with book 1.

Bible:  This week we will finish up unit 2 on the setting of the Bible.  We will begin working on memorizing the books of the Old Testament this week, the test is October 18.

History:  We will continue working on latitude and longitude and maps this week.  Friday will be a quiz on the geography terms we have used so far this year.

Language arts:  We continue to read and learn from the novel Tuck Everlasting.  Next week Wednesday Miss Reinders and I will also introduce "The Amazing Read" to the 6th graders.  This is a reading program where students read a book of a different genre/author each month.  There is a lot of freedom within the book choices.  More details to come on this.  GRADES:  Your child's LA grades will be put in the gradebook this week.  Now that there have been a few grades, it will give you a clearer picture of how your child is doing.

PE: This week in PE we will be finishing up our soccer unit.  The students will be having a test over the rules and positions of soccer.  The review sheet is posted on moodle under the PE section labeled soccer.    Reminder:  6B will take their soccer test on Tuesday October 8, 6A will take their soccer test on Friday, October 11.

Orchestra: We will have orchestra 3 days  this coming week YEH!!!  So we will work on lessons 34 and 35 in our book and  get all the way through all 4 of our sheet music pieces.  That is a lot of music but we can do it!

Science: "What MATTERs?"  This will be our essential question in our upcoming unit of study.  We'll be using our scientific measurement skills as well as our natural curiosity and great creative minds to investigate what "matter" is and different ways we can classify it scientifically.

Spanish:   We will be finishing up our first big Spanish project using iMovie this coming week and students will get to show/view them in class.  Again, this takes the place of a test for this unit.

Seventh Grade:

Band:  We will be working hard on choosing and practicing our solos for Nov. 19.  All students will be participating by playing a Solo for a judge on Nov. 19.  They will work hard and do a great job!  Can you help by playing piano for some students?  Let Mrs. VN know!

Bible:

Sanderson: We're examining landmarks and seasons of our Journeys with Jesus this week.

Van Noord: We finished Habakkuk, and reviewed all the prophets we have studied so far.  Next we begin Isaiah.

History:  Next week we will continue our look at Hinduism and Buddhism.  There is some homework due on Monday for students who did not finish their work in class today.  Please help remind them after the service project.  Thanks.

PE:  This week in PE we will be finishing our soccer unit.  The students will be taking a quiz over the rules of soccer the following week.  The review sheet is posted on moodle for students to study from.  Reminder:  Students will be taking their soccer test the week of October 14.

Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): We will test on chapter 2 (operations with integers) on Wednesday.  An online practice test has been assigned and is due Tuesday.  For the rest of the week we will begin looking at rational numbers (fractions and decimals).

Pre-Algebra (Kiser): In the coming week we will be perfecting our skills comparing decimals and fractions.  Key vocabulary: rational numbers, whole numbers, integers, inverse and reciprocal.

Orchestra:  All 7th graders need to bring their solos as well as their ensemble  music every day next week  because we have some piano players showing up to rehearse with the students.  We will look carefully at any hard sections.

Spanish:  7D - We will begin piecing together sentences with practice translations that incorporate the current vocabulary and definite and indefinite articles.  7E - The students will have a QUIZ on the current vocabulary over "La sala y el dormitorio" and the prepositions.  All study resources are on Moodle.  7F -  Students will be submitting their "Preppy Prepositions" projects on Monday and beginning work on use of the articles.

Eighth Grade:

8th Grade Yearbook Pictures:  This past week a form was sent out about the upcoming school picture day, October 11.  This will be an opportunity for your 8th grader to get a yearbook picture taken.  Each student WILL have their picture taken for use in class composite pictures, school records, and use for the character drawings in the yearbook.  If, however, you would like to submit a different picture for the yearbook, you will soon have the opportunity to do that.  --Mr. Witte

Algebra:  8 Witte: Next week we will be finishing up our look at chapter 2.  We will have a test on chapter 2 planned for next Thursday.  We will take some time to review on Tuesday and Wednesday before the test.

Band:  We will be performing together on November 19 for judges in the band room during band time - 11:15-11:45.  Parents are welcome to come. Add this to your calendar!

Bible:

8W Bible: Next week we will continue looking at some of the early stories from Jesus' ministry including calling his disciples and the wedding at Cana.  We will introduce some Bible memory: Romans 3:21-26 and come up with a plan to have that memorized.

Geometry: We are finishing chapter 2. We will begin reviewing on Tuesday, 10/8, and plan to have the chapter 2 test on Thursday, 10/10.

History:  We will continue our study of the Revolutionary War.  You should be continuing to work on your Chapter 6 outline from the textbook.  It will be due on Friday.  Test the following Tuesday (10/15) on Chapter 6 and the Liberty! videos.

PE:  This week in PE we will be working through our soccer unit.  This is a short unit with a quiz at the end.  Reminder:  The soccer review sheet is posted on moodle, and the test with be the week of October 14.

Orchestra:  The 8th grade string players will perform together for a judge during  Solo and

Ensemble at school on November 19. Some of the 8th graders are also performing solos, so if you are planning to play a solo also be sure to bring your piano music along every day to school (unless you want to find your own piano player).  We hope to have an accompanist this Tuesday and Thursday.

Spanish:  Last week, students wrote a list of three chores they were going to be doing around the house!  If they don't usually have specific chores to do, maybe you can suggest something to them. :)  Both 8th grade classes will have a vocabularyquiz on Friday next week, also.  Resources are on Moodle.
