Over the weekend, students will be examining their drafts and studying the notes and suggestions that they received from their classmates during our peer review. ***Parents*** Today, your student will be bringing you two things: a form that is titled "NHD Parent Review", and another titled "NHD Rubric". The rubric is simply to serve as a reference for you and your student as their progress on the essay continues. I am requesting that the "Parent Review" form be completed and turned in by Wednesday (Oct. 23), along with a draft of your son's/daughter's paper that has edited in pen/pencil by a parent. All the instructions for revision are included on the form, but please contact me with any further questions or clarifications.

Spanish:  All 8th graders have a BLUE sheet which they are to explain to you and have you sign (it's about chores they said they would do over the past couple weeks, and whether or not they did them.  You just need to sign to verify.  :)  ALSO, they may begin working on their take-home TEST which is outlined on Moodle (due November 1).

Middle School Matters

October 11, 2013

Middle School Matters

For the Week of: 10.14.13

General Announcements:

Study Skills:  Different ways to study for a test is the topic for this week.

Dessert Theatre:  And the 8th grade musical is...Gilbert and Sullivan's swashbuckling fun operetta, "The Pirates of Penzance!"  To keep  up to date on all things musical, please keep this link on hand:  http://acsdesserttheatre.weebly.com/   You will find a synopsis of the show, audition and rehearsal information, as well as wonderful ways you can help make this year's show it's very best.

Sixth Grade:

Art: In class we are working on visually showing how we see God's hand at work in our lives.  Check moodle for homework; last week I saw many great landscapes!

Band:  We finished page 34.  Next up (you guessed it: 35).  Some practice numbers for September were low. They can make this up with stronger October numbers.

Bible:  Finishing up our unit on the setting of the Bible looking at the locations on a map of where the stories happened.  Old Testament books of the Bible due on Friday.

History:  Working on a Same Latitude, Different Attitude project that will be completed at school.  Next unit for geography is landforms.

Language arts: Quiz on Thursday, October 17

Science: We have determined that different states of matter have different "squishabilities" and have drawn conclusions about what that means about their composition on the particle level.  We're exploring what it means that scientists make models to help picture and predict.

Spanish:   Our projects are complete and have been uploaded!  We will get to view them together in class next week, and meanwhile have begun to learn the Spanish alfabeto.

Seventh Grade:

Art: In class we are working on sculpting one endangered species or animals out of poster board.  The pinwheel project is due for 7f on Monday and 7d on Tuesday.  Please check moodle for sketchbook homework.

Band:  Solo and Ensemble rehearsal is in full swing.  You should be hearing LOTS of work on solos.  Go team!  Some practice numbers for September were low. They can make this up with stronger October numbers.

Bible:

Sanderson - We've shared with one another about our own Spiritual Journeys (wow, was this cool!).  We'll be taking a week to look at prayer throughout the Old Testament.

VN - We are working our way through Isaiah.  Next up: Daniel!  :)

Wanner - we are nearing the end of our study of 1 and 2 Samuel and will have a quest on 1 and 2 Samuel end of next week or early the week of the 21st; review materials will be handed out.  Also, students were given a new Bible memory passage (Romans 12: 9 - 12) to learn for October 23.  Next up after the quest is King Solomon and the temple.

History:  On Wednesday we will take a quick quiz on Hinduism and Buddhism.  It will cover the two note sheets we have completed and the worldview chart that we filled in together as a class.  Next week we will also spend some time looking at some of the more recent history of South Asia.

Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): The set of rational numbers includes any number that can be written as a fraction.  We'll be working with these numbers this week and will have a quiz on common fraction/decimal/percent equivalencies on Thursday.  The students have a chart from which to memorize these.

Spanish:  7D -  Vocabulary QUIZ on Monday.  Vocabulary lists (things in the living room and bedroom, prepositions) are on Moodle.  7E - We will continue to practice putting our parts of speech together to write and translate longer sentences.  Quia assignment 2B is due Tuesday.  Please note:  Quia assignments can be done as many times as students want prior to the deadline, and the best score will be recorded!    7F - Has their first translation practice with a handout sheet given in class.  Students are to try their best to write the sentences using their own knowledge, along with their Moodle resources.  With rare exception, they should never use a translator (looking up a color or old adjective -- one word -- is ok.)  They will be graded on their valiant effort, but I expect lots of mistakes.  We will go over this on MONDAY.

Eighth Grade:

Algebra:

Witte:  Next week we will spend a lot of time working on solving equations.  It will be important that students learn how to show their work correctly on their assignments.  If there is some confusion, take a look at my short algebra videos to see examples of how to correctly solve and show your work.  A link for these videos can be found on my Algebra moodle page or by clicking here.

Art: In class we will have a quiz on printmaking and the Powerpoints are on moodle to study from.  Next we will work on a project that includes learning calligraphy and design.

Band: Great things are happening on some wonderful pieces.  Festival will be SO FUN with this group.

Bible:

Witte:  Next week in Bible we will take some time to work on our first Bible memory verse.  This quiz will be on Friday.  We will also look at a few more stories including Jesus clearing the Temple, Nicodemus, and the Samaritan Woman at the Well.  Through all of these stories, we are seeing different ways that Jesus was revealing who he truly was during the early stages of his ministry.

Geometry: We have finished chapter 2 and will be working on all types of angles in chapter 3. Parents of 8th-grade Geometry students: Please note that Mrs. Triezenberg will be available for parent conferences on Thursday evening, October 17. Hope to see you then.

History:  First draft of the NHD papers are due on Monday, so we will have our Chapter 6 Revolutionary War test on Wednesday.  Test will be over information in Chapter 6 and from the Liberty! documentaries we have taken notes on in class.

Spanish:  It is so great to see "my" 8th graders again!  We had a vocabulary quiz today (a great way to show them how much I missed them) and will continue talking about chores next week:  What we are going to do, what we have to do, and what we just got done doing.  Look for a sheet to be signed by you next Friday.
