Service Project and Culver's Permission Slip and Form

Art: In class we continue work on creating self portraits in three different styles.  Please check moodle for sketchbook homework.

Band:  Great job on the concert!  Now we are back to normal life and learning in our method books and sheet music!

Bible:  Philippians 2: 1-8 due on Wednesday.  We are continuing our study of the first few chapters of Genesis that set the stage for the whole Bible.

History:  Beginning a new unit on Mesopotamia that will continue through the month of January.  Global Studies Weekly # 10 on the United States due next THURSDAY.

PE: Students have been improving their basketball skills and putting them to use during game play. We will be wrapping up our basketball unit this coming week with a project. The project description is posted on Moodle.

Science: We'll continue studying atoms and The Periodic Table.

Spanish:   TESTS  this week - 6A and 6B on Tuesday.  6C on Wednesday.  Materials to study are on Moodle, and a practice test on their Quia homework site was assigned.  (Remember, these assignments can be done as many times as desired for the best grade possible up until the due date.) Students needing some extra help are more than welcome to see me during lunch on any day except Tuesday.

    7th Grade News

Algebra (7th):  This week we will continue studying chapter 6. We will be studying compound inequalities and absolute-value inequalities.

Art: Both 7th grade classes MUST be completed (cut out , placed on the red clay tile and slipped) with their positive and negative robots by the end of their class on Thursday or Friday.  Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignments due dates.

Band:  Great job on the concert!  Now we are back to normal life and learning in our method books and sheet music!

Bible: Bible memory work is due on Tuesday. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

History:  Next week we will be reviewing for a history test on Wednesday.  A set of flash cards will be up on moodle this weekend to help students start studying.  Thursday we will take an in-class geography bee quiz to see who will represent the 7th grade in the school geography bee.

Language arts: After learning about Charles Dickens' life and writing style, we are now studying his classic A Christmas Carol while recognizing that it is an allegory (ask your kids what this means!) Aside from being a holiday classic, the stories underlying challenge to society is incredibly important to remember this time of year. How can we be charitable? How can we be good givers? How can we be good receivers?

Students will also be keeping in mind the difference between static characters and dynamic characters in literature. This will help us better understand the change of heart in Ebenezer Scrooge. Students will be challenged to connect this element to our school theme of "know, grow, go"; special emphasis on the "grow".

PE: Students have been improving their basketball skills and putting them to use during game play. There will be a test this coming week. A review sheet is posted on Moodle.

Pre-Algebra (Kiser): Today we began Chapter 6 Percents. In this chapter, we will learn how to solve percent problems involving taxes, tips, discounts, simple interest, and percents of increase and decrease.

Pre-Algebra (Sanderson): We will finish up our study of geometry this week.

Science: Test over honey bees this Thursday.  Study guide has been handed out.

Spanish:  We are going to learn some Christmas Carols in Spanish!

    8th Grade News

Dessert Theatre:  We are under way!  Please keep the website link handy for schedule and other important information:  http://acsdesserttheatre.weebly.com/

8th Grade Yearbook and Baby Pictures:  Please send in those yearbook and baby pictures by next week.  They are due before Christmas break.  Thanks.

Algebra (8th):  Quiz on chapter 6 this Wednesday.

Algebra (Holtrop):  We will have started chapter 6. In this chapter we will be solving and graphing linear inequalities.

Art: In class all classes are working on creating a family portrait just using shapes of cut out cardboard.  This project has been inspired the minimalist artist Frank Stella.  Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignments.

Band:  Great job on the concert!  Now we are back to normal life and learning in our method books and sheet music!

Bible:  Students have been working diligently in groups to prepare to teach the class about an important part of Jesus' Early Ministry. Groups will be presenting beginning next week. Also, look for a Bible Memory, Romans 3:21-26, that will be due by Friday, December 19 (see Moodle for resources). If students will be leaving early for break, it is their responsibility to get the memory work done before they go. Memory work done after break will be docked points.

Geometry: We have finished chapter 6 and are working on proofs of congruent triangles.  There will be one quiz on chapter 7 next week and the test will be after Christmas break.

History:  Next week we will continue our quick overview of Chapter 10.  We will be learning about the presidency of Andrew Jackson and the Trail of Tears.  There is a Chapter 9 Review Final Assignment due on Monday.  On Tuesday we will take the in-class geography bee quiz to see who will represent the 8th grade in the school geography bee.

Language arts: The end of NHD is nearly here! The final draft and turn-in date is Monday, December 15. Students need to come to class on Monday ready to turn in every element of their project. Once the final submissions are in, the 8th graders will celebrate the annual Airing of Grievances. This will be fun!

As we close the 2014 school year and look forward to 2015, we will finish warming up for our first full-length novel study. Students are reviewing the elements of plot and learning to dissect stories based on inciting events, conflict, etc. To help us accomplish this, we are studying some short stories about adolescence ("Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto, "The Moustache" by Robert Cormier). These stories are also preparing us for the main theme we will be exploring through the rest of the year: identity. Students will be challenged thoughtfully and critically to deduce what determines a person's underlying identity; in doing so, we will also learn about agency, specifically in how we can affect the world in a Christian way. This will all tie in very intentionally to the last element of our school theme this year: "go"

PE: Students have been improving their basketball skills and putting them to use during game play. There will be a test this coming week. A review sheet is posted on Moodle.

Science: Planning to finish our study of volcanoes this week with a test the week after Christmas break.

Spanish:  8th graders will be working on group presentations to give us glimpses of how Christmas is celebrated similarly/differently in various Spanish-speaking countries.
