Art: Next week in class we will work on pointillism and drawing still lives.  Check out the work of Georges Seurat for an idea of what we are working on.

Bible: Students have been busy putting together plays with Mr. Hoo! These plays are based on the different parables and stories discussed during our Jesus Unit. The 5th graders put on two consecutive performances this morning, and we are looking for future performance dates early next week. Parents are welcome! Just a reminder that students should also continue working on the list of Bible memory during our Jesus Unit.

Band - we are continuing to work gradually through the book!  Please encourage regular practice!  Thank you!

Language arts: We have wrapped up our Informative Writing with some excellent research papers. Next week we look forward to beginning the novel study of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. We will be looking at the themes of character development, identity and analyzing different views of Jesus coupled with our Jesus Unit. Students were sent home with a more formal letter yesterday about the novel.

Math: Next week will be our last week of fractions! After the final test, we look forward to moving on to the wonderful world of Geometry.

    6th Grade News
    6th

Thanks to each of you who have signed up so far to help us with devotions on Friday mornings.  The kids appreciate your taking the time to come in, and share what is on your heart.  Your stories and connections help kids start the day off well.  We are in need of more parents to sign up to lead us in devotions.  If you can help, would you please click on this link and put your name in the box on the date you can come.  You don't need to be long, because we start at 8:00 and need to send them to choir by 8:10! Thank you!

Art: In art we are working on experimenting with watercolor.  Next week we will begin, transitioning to work on drawing our landscapes and then using the experiments to fill in the color.  Please continue to check the homework calendar for due dates.

Band:  Great job on the duet quizzes - also some great videos were sent in.  We are ALMOST done with book 2.  Thursday we did a little show for KD - SO fun to play for them.  They are studying I is for Instrument, so we showed them ours and played for them.

History:  6th Grade Ancient Greek Olympic games every day this week.  Different events happening on each day, some require mental ability, some teamwork, and some physical ability.  Here is a schedule of events.  Test on Ancient Greece next week Thursday over all the notes, maps, and movies.

Language arts:  Next week, students will receive their Culture Poems back.   Please ask to see the poem and rubric.  Students will need to make appropriate revisions before printing it in color for the final portfolio.   In addition, we will continue to research our countries---specifically, the government and places to visit.  From our research, we will pick topics that we hope to write about in our newspapers (people, land, food, recreational activities, famous places, etc.).  Students will focus on writing about these topics using the proper paragraph structure (topic sentence, detail sentences with examples and transition words, and a conclusion sentence).  If your students have nothing to do this weekend, help them get a head start on their display boards.  Click on Display Board Requirements. These are due the week after spring break…...but don't let your child wait that long.  March is MADNESS!

We will continue solving equations next week and will have a our Chapter 8 Test on Friday.  The test will cover solving single step addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations.  A study guide and practice test will come home Monday. GRCH Scheduling: As we plan for the coming school year, it is very helpful for us to have as many schedules set as possible. If you have not made your final choice for next year, you may want to consider a preliminary registration to help in creating the best possible schedule for your student should they come our way this fall. The final date for the 8th grade scheduling is Tuesday, MARCH 10.  More information and pre-registration, which is required, can be found here: http://counselors.grcs.org/academic/academics-by-year/8th-grade/8th-grade-scheduling/

    GRCH June Term

Grand Rapids Christian High School is excited to re-launch June Term, an innovative three-week summer session that enables students to earn a semester credit in courses that are required for graduation. June Term is open to incoming 9th - 12th grade students who desire to earn high school credit, and focus on a single course at a pace that is not impacted by the busyness of a school-year schedule.

Why are we offering June Term? To offer students opportunities for summer enrichment, earn high school credit, and create flexibility in a high school student's schedule. For current 8th grades, this is a great way to experience a high school course before the school year begins. In fact, there are several courses intended for incoming students, including: Spanish 1, World History and Geography, Outdoor Adventures, and Mural Art.

To learn more about June Term, to find out what classes are available, and to register, click June Term!

    • What: June Term

    • Who may register:  Students entering 9th - 12th grades in August 2015

    • When: June 8 - 26, 2015 (3 hours/day)

    • Cost: $350/course

    • Registration Deadline: May 1, 2015

    • Questions? GRCHS Counseling Department @ 574-5650

Algebra (8th):  We are in the middle of chapter 9.  This is a challenging chapter for students so we have been taking two days over several of the sections.  Near the beginning of next week, there will be a test over this chapter.

Algebra (Holtrop): We are wrapping up Chapter 8 with Tuesday set for taking the test. Today students were working on a review packet. I have a list of ideas that they can do to help prepare for this test that is coming up. Please encourage them to take time to study because a lot of new concepts are being covered. Later next week we will be moving forward and we will be looking at Chapter 9 in two parts.

Art: In class we will be working on the ceramic pots again.  We have about 2 weeks yet to build and add texture to these pots.  Please continue to check moodle for homework due dates.

Band:  We are adding even more music and more genres to our folders.  Our next concert is for Fine Arts Night - here at school - April 23.  Can't wait to show you what we can do!

Bible:  We have been looking at the world after Jesus ascended into heaven. The void of Jesus's absence was filled through the Holy Spirit here on Earth. After examining the supernatural phenomena found at Pentecost, students have been looking at the Holy Spirit's work in their own lives.

Geometry: We have finished unit 9 and will spend time working on finding surface area and volume with three-dimensional figures over the next two weeks.

History:  Next week we will begin our study of Chapter 14 on how our nation continued to divide, ultimately leading into the Civil War.
